Internet speed and IP lookup: what the numbers mean

Separate local Wi-Fi, internet throughput, latency and public-IP information before diagnosing a slow connection.

Identify the symptom first

A slow download, a delayed video call and a webpage that waits before loading can have different causes. Throughput measures transferred data over time; latency measures delay. An IP lookup reports address-related information and does not measure connection quality. A private local address is not the same as the public address seen by a remote service.

Run a controlled comparison

Pause large transfers on your own devices, record whether you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and run a reputable speed test more than once. Test from the same location and device when comparing results. Speed tests transfer real data and can consume a metered allowance. A single result depends on the route, test server and current load; it is not a permanent certification of your internet plan.

Keep bits and bytes separate

An advertised 100 megabits per second is approximately 12.5 megabytes per second before protocol overhead. A file-transfer application displaying MB/s will therefore show a smaller number than a speed test displaying Mbps. Background traffic, storage speed and the remote server can reduce an actual download further. Record the displayed unit instead of comparing bare numbers.

Interpret location and privacy cautiously

Public-IP geolocation is approximate and can describe an ISP gateway or VPN exit, not the device’s precise position. Dev Bench’s local browser inspector does not perform a public-IP lookup or speed test. Use a suitable diagnostic service only when that information is needed, and share the minimum necessary details in a support report. Reproduce the issue before changing routers, DNS settings or security software.
